Horses are considered to be one of the best pets to have. They are different from puppies and cats that we can cuddle anytime we want. Caring for them is much different considering their sizes and the foods they eat. Obviously, they require a place to rest as they can’t be placed inside the house. To make it simple, they should be treated differently.
Although horses are different from our little animals, they also need to be cared and loved. We are very familiar with the situation when our pets are being wounded due to specific reasons. The question is, do you know what to do? We do not have to be a vet to manage horse wound. Why? Well because there are basic things that we have to learn on order to manage whatever type of wounds or summer sore our horse may have.
A horse wound can come in many kinds ranging from mild to severe. Ever kind requires specific treatments and management. Here are some of the wound types for us to be oriented and to know what type of wound our horse is experiencing:
Puncture
This wound includes small tear but deep penetration in the skin. This s prone to infection so proper care should be initiated.
Incised
Just like the cut of the knife, this type of wound appears to be smooth and clean. Most commonly, suturing and stapling is done to close the horse wound.
Laceration
This one is opposite to incised wounds. This appears to be rough resting from tissue damage or proud flesh.
Abrasion
This is considered to be the mildest type of wound. This is only a damage on the superficial surface of the skin. Minimal treatment is needed in this.
Whatever type of wound your horse might have, you will have to treat it with proper care to avoid infection. There are different processes included in proper management of horse wound and they include:
Cleaning
This is the first step in wound care. Before doing and applying anything, washing the wound is very necessary as the main goal in here is to prevent infection. When infection takes place, it will be hard to treat the wound. Also, you will be spending money for antibiotics. Removing dirt around the wound will be necessary.
Debridement
This is the process of removing dead tissues including those dying ones. If these are not removed, healing will be delayed. This process will include surgery with a vet.
If the horse wound is severe, immediate surgery can be required. It is never a wise idea to delay the treatment of wound. You do not want your pet to suffer for a long time so you have to know how to deal with things properly.
After the initial wound care has been rendered. Your next responsibility on your horse wound is to maintain the status of the dressing. The dressing is used to cover the wound while healing. This is to avoid dusts and dirt from entering the wound and delay the healing process.
The dressing should be replaced every other day or depending on the necessity. You must have a proper container for the materials like bandage, gauze, plaster, scissor, antiseptic and the likes. You should bear these things on your mind. Be sure that you render the most appropriate care to your horse in cases of horse wound.
