The Attraction of Finding a Cheap Fare

How many times have you searched for cheap flights, found just the right one, and realized that the price was ridiculously high? Too often, airlines set their fares and unsuspecting customers pay those fares without ever realizing they have a choice. Not only can they choose the carrier and flight departure and arrival times, but they can actually choose their fare, by using one of many airfare comparison sites.

Initially, a consumer had to visit a site like Expedia.com or Orbitz.com to view a comparison of fares for a specific itinerary. But even then, the commissions paid to the sites offset some or all of the savings. Today, however, most airlines offer direct comparisons of their various ticket prices online.

In addition, more and more sites are offering not only a real-time price comparison, but a promise to notify you of any drop in prices after booking. This takes much of the worry out of airline reservation and transfers control of their purchases back to the consumers.
